FAQs: Crimson Steel Casket (Upgrade from Orion)

What does 20 gauge steel mean on a casket?
Gauge measures the thickness of the steel, and a lower number means thicker metal. A 20 gauge casket is the most widely chosen steel option in the United States, offering solid protection and a finished appearance at a more accessible price than heavier gauges.
Both are steel. An 18 gauge casket uses thicker metal and weighs more, while 20 gauge is slightly lighter and more affordable. The finish, interior and hardware options are similar, so the choice usually comes down to budget and how much weight the family wants to carry.
It is a deep burgundy red, richer and darker than a bright red, with a white crepe interior. The finish has depth to it and reads as traditional rather than bold.
It is less common than white or blue and it is chosen deliberately. Burgundy in particular reads as formal and traditional, which is why families often pick it when a plain finish feels too restrained.
The Crimson is a deep burgundy. The Mandarin is a warmer adobe red with an orange leaning tone. If you want the darker, more traditional red, the Crimson is the closer match.
It weighs about 180 pounds empty. That is a normal weight for a 20 gauge steel casket and is typically carried by six pallbearers, which is worth mentioning to your funeral director when they plan the service.
It ships exactly as pictured, with the same finish, interior fabric and hardware. This is a standard catalog casket rather than a made to order one, so what you see on this page is what arrives.
