FAQs: Orion Silver Steel Casket

What does 20 gauge steel mean on a casket?
Gauge measures the thickness of the steel, and a lower number means thicker metal. A 20 gauge casket is the most widely chosen steel option in the United States, offering solid protection and a finished appearance at a more accessible price than heavier gauges.
Both are steel. An 18 gauge casket uses thicker metal and weighs more, while 20 gauge is slightly lighter and more affordable. The finish, interior and hardware options are similar, so the choice usually comes down to budget and how much weight the family wants to carry.
It is a silver finish, a soft even gray rather than a bright metallic, with a white crepe interior. It reads as calm and neutral in person.
All three are in the gray family. The Orion Silver is a soft mid gray, the Essex is a lighter platinum, and the Gunmetal is a darker platinum. Comparing the three photographs is the clearest way to choose.
Silver is a common choice when a family wants something neutral that suits any service. It carries none of the associations of white or black and works with most flower arrangements.
It weighs about 180 pounds empty. That is a normal weight for a 20 gauge steel casket and is typically carried by six pallbearers, which is worth mentioning to your funeral director when they plan the service.
It ships exactly as pictured, with the same finish, interior fabric and hardware. This is a standard catalog casket rather than a made to order one, so what you see on this page is what arrives.
