FAQs: Orchid Steel Casket (Upgrade from Orion)

What does 20 gauge steel mean on a casket?
Gauge measures the thickness of the steel, and a lower number means thicker metal. A 20 gauge casket is the most widely chosen steel option in the United States, offering solid protection and a finished appearance at a more accessible price than heavier gauges.
Both are steel. An 18 gauge casket uses thicker metal and weighs more, while 20 gauge is slightly lighter and more affordable. The finish, interior and hardware options are similar, so the choice usually comes down to budget and how much weight the family wants to carry.
The exterior is a light lavender, a pale and gentle purple rather than a deep one. The interior is a soft pink crepe, so the two colors sit close together in tone.
It is chosen more often than people expect. Lavender reads as gentle rather than bright, and families frequently pick it when a traditional white or blue feels too plain for the person they are honoring.
Both are in the purple family. The Orchid is a lighter lavender throughout, while the Heavenly Mother is a slightly deeper lilac with platinum highlights. Comparing the two photographs side by side is the clearest way to tell.
It weighs about 180 pounds empty. That is a normal weight for a 20 gauge steel casket and is typically carried by six pallbearers, which is worth mentioning to your funeral director when they plan the service.
Screens vary, so a pale color like lavender can read slightly warmer or cooler depending on the display. The casket itself ships exactly as pictured, with the same finish and interior.
